Windows 7 to Windows 10: Practical Reasons To Upgrade Your PC Today

If you’ve held off upgrading your old computer OS to Windows 10 for a while now because you think it’s a bit costly, then this is the right time to do so. Besides, you can find Windows 10 free upgrade download links online which you can just activate later with a product key.

We love Windows 7. I have been using it for 5 years – which was actually when Windows 10 was officially launched – and it has been serving me well on my daily workloads. So why didn’t I upgrade right away?

One reason – my computer is old. I own a Sony Vaio which is now 8 years old and I’m not sure if it’s the best move to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

Windows 10 desktopJust last month, though, I’ve taken the leap and switched to the newest version of Microsoft Windows OS instead of Windows 8.

How did it turn out?

It works perfectly on old computers too!

I can’t lie. Although my laptop is old, it can still meet the system requirements of Windows 10, allowing the OS to work smoothly on my computer. I am not sure about older computers but I’ve seen many testimonials and demos online showing how they powered their PC (one even used a 2009-released netbook!) using a Windows 10 free upgrade download.

So why upgrade to Windows 10 today?

Windows 10 is a big improvement over Windows 7 and 8. Although Windows 7 is the start of the modernized operating system, the fact that it was launched back in 2009 already makes it very old.

So what’s the biggest consideration when making this decision?

Microsoft will NO LONGER SUPPORT Windows 7 starting January 15, 2020!

The Windows OS products have 2 expiration dates. One sees the end of mainstream support and the second is the end of extended support. For Windows 7, that will be very early next year.

Leaving the mainstream support period means Microsoft will no longer add new features for the Windows product and its warranty claims end. Typically, this expires 5 years after the product’s release.

For the next 5 years, the Windows product is placed under an extended support. During this period, Microsoft will continue to fix bug issues and provide security patches but, like I already mentioned, it won’t actively develop OS with new features.

However, the case for Windows 7 is special. Since many businesses still have a Windows 7 hangover, Microsoft offered a compromise to give extended support until 2023 for the Windows 7 Pro and Enterprise.

Another important factor that should influence your decision is the fact that major software upgrades will soon no longer work on Windows 7. This will be a big problem if you are using CAD and photo and video editing software which continuously see updates on their platforms.

Knowing Windows 10

Windows 10 is a Microsoft operating system meant to power personal computers, tablets, embedded devices and internet of things devices. It was released in July 2015 as a follow-up to Windows 8. After Windows 10, Microsoft users may no longer see a new version as Microsoft said it will upgrade Windows 10 in perpetuity rather than release a new, full-fledged OS.

Windows 10 OSAnyone adopting Windows 10 can upgrade directly from Windows 7 or Windows 8 without re-imaging or performing intrusive and time-consuming system wipes and upgrade procedures. You only need an installer and a Windows 10 product key you can buy here at Softvire. All of your old applications and software on the previous OS as well as settings and preferences will then be transferred over to Windows 10.

System Requirements:

Product Format: Digital License

Product Type: Operating System

Processor – 1 GHz or faster

  • 1 GB RAM (32-bit)
  • 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

Hard Disk Space:

  • 16 GB hard disk space (32-bit)
  • 20 GB hard disk space (64-bit)

  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.
  • Screen resolution of at least 1024×768 pixels.

Best Features:

The first thing that you’ll notice in Windows 10 is the return of Live Tiles that Microsoft replaced in Windows 8. Users can still access the touch-centric Metro interface, though, from a panel on the right side of the Start Menu.

While it looks a lot like Windows 8, Windows 10 actually comes with a lot of improved features. Most of the added tools focus on the security of your computer, although you’ll still need the added protection that only antivirus software can provide.

The best features you’ll find are:

1. Ransomware Prevention

Windows 10 has a pre-installed protection feature that prevents ransomware from locking up a user’s work and personal documents on their computer. The tool called Windows Defender Security Center lets you approve which apps can access and change files saved in your Desktop and folders.

The Windows Defender Exploit Guard tool scans malware. It quarantines or removes any detected malware to stop attacks and blocks malicious programs on your computer or office network. It also isolates infected computers on your network.

3. Safer Web Browsing

The Windows Defender Application Guard lets you use the Edge browser inside a virtual machine. If you unknowingly contracts malware by visiting a malicious website, it won’t be able to damage the computer or the network, because it will be confined inside this virtual machine.

My People feature allows you to pin your most-used business contacts as shortcut icons on the 10 taskbars. This lets you send them an email or start a video call through Skype in just a single click on the icon.

The technology feature in the Windows Update tool called Unified Update Platform (UUP) streamlines the update process. It identifies new changes to Windows 10 that your computer needs and downloads only those specific updates.

Microsoft claims UUP can reduce the download size of updates by up to 35 percent, sparing storage space on your computer and the time it takes to install updates.

6. Syncing Between Personal and Work Computers

There is a timeline feature that saves “snapshots” of Windows applications you were using at a given point of time. You can simply select this snapshot at the Task View icon to continue working on something where you left off.

These snapshots can be synced across your different computers running on Windows 10 OS. You can easily open files you created on your home computer from your work computer or vice versa.

7. Fast Configuration of Business Computers

The Autopilot tool lets you set up system configurations from the cloud onto your business’s Windows 10 computers. For example, when you buy a new computer, you can just connect it to your office network and the new PC automatically configures itself according to your business’s required settings.

However, Autopilot is only available in the Education, Enterprise and Professional editions which require Azure Active Directory.

Options to Upgrade Windows 7 to windows 10

If you want a supported operating system when 2020 comes, I have 2 practical solutions you can look into.

1 – Install Windows 10 Software and Buy Windows 10 Product Key

Check your machine if it complies with the Windows 10 system requirements. Search for a legit installer online or you can buy it from Softvire along with the product key to activate it.

Softvire Windows 10 saleThe requirements noted above are the bare minimums to get Windows 10 running on a computer so the higher the specs of your PC, the better.

2 – Buy a New Computer With Windows 10

Like I mentioned a while back, running Windows 10 in an older PC isn’t a problem. The lowest specs this software requires is 1GB RAM and 16 GB hard disk space (32-bit). Most of the high-end laptops and netbooks from 2007 have these specs so don’t worry about having a 12-year-old PC. However, I cannot assure you of its performance. It works but it may not be as efficient as the newer machines.

So your best bet here is to buy a new laptop.

Most of the new laptops and PCs at the stores run already run in Windows 10. Thankfully, you can already buy a good laptop today for only $500. Lenovo, Acer and Asus have good offerings in this bracket so you can browse through their websites for recommendations.
